Now, I was expecting to have the odd ache and pain that comes from using your muscles and joints over the years… the many many years. I was also figuring on the odd “oops!” when I sneeze or cough too hard…. but this!!
Nobody told me that I would have trouble crossing the room without forgetting why I was
crossing it. Mom never explained that I would go through periods of extreme heat where I could strip naked and roll in snow bank, only to wait 20 minutes and require four sweaters and a blanket to keep warm. Either of these scenarios is interchangeable and totally, without notice, making for some really awkward moments when this happens in front of clients or coworkers..
Then there are the never ending periods where we learn to get by on about two minutes of sleep per night, which only sinks us deeper into the fog that comes with the total loss of short-term memory.
Of course, all of this is the precursor to the temper flares that are totally embarrassing and inexplicable... very problematic for family and friends.
Lastly, it hurts!! Joints ache and swell with every turn in the weather… every childhood injury coming back to haunt us. Once upon a time, we could bend into a pretzel but now, we can’t even bend.
… but hey… we will be able to get into the theatres with a seniors discount…yippee!

We think Mom had dementia for quite a while before it was diagnosed, largely because she lived alone and it went undetected. We were all from away and she was very clever at hiding her memory issues over the phone.
She had always been very independent, going to the gym two or three times weekly, driving to and from the grocery store, etc. Before we left Montreal, we had all tried, at one time or another to get her to agree to live in one of the most beautiful and well run assisted living locations in that city, if only because we knew she would be safe in having company. She absolutely refused, choosing instead, to stay in her own home…. alone.
When we last went for a visit, we asked after her beloved cat, Pooh. It was when she responded with “where’s my what?”, we realized that we would not be leaving Montreal without her. The cat was fine… and fed… but completely gone from Mom’s memory… for that moment, anyway.
Upon contacting Mom’s friends to let them know, we were told stories about her wandering
around downtown Montreal, disoriented and unable to find her way home. She had also become “lost” in her own apartment, unable to find her way from the bathroom to the living room. Why did they not call us and let us know what was going on? … because Mom had begged them not to.
So, Mom and Pooh came to live with me and my brother took care of settling Mom’s financial issues. The disease progressed very fast for Mom and she passed within a year and a half. Surely, had she been diagnosed earlier, the correct meds could have extended her life some. We all have trouble believing that our parent(s) are not immortal, after all, they have been around since we were born. I’m glad we had spent time with her before her death and that it happened when she was with family and not alone.
Please keep a watchful eye on your loved ones and do not always take their word for it when they say that all is well. This isn’t always easy, sometimes loved ones are far away, sometimes they put on a good show when we come to visit. However, there is one thing that you have forgotten… between the surgery and starting to run again, you may need some help at home while you are learning to get back on your feet. Surgery of any kind is a trauma and debilitating, especially when it affects your mobility but even when it doesn’t. This is particularly true when it comes to the first few days home. You may need help with meal prep, bathing, keeping the house up and feeding the dog because you really won’t feel like doing it.
