Growing older is definitely not for the faint of heart!

Now, I was expecting to have the odd ache and pain that comes from using your muscles and joints over the years… the many many years. I was also figuring on the odd “oops!” when I sneeze or cough too hard…. but this!!

Nobody told me that I would have trouble crossing the room without forgetting why I wasgetty rm photo of finger with string crossing it. Mom never explained that I would go through periods of extreme heat where I could strip naked and roll in snow bank, only to wait 20 minutes and require four sweaters and a blanket to keep warm. Either of these scenarios is interchangeable and totally, without notice, making for some really awkward moments when this happens in front of clients or coworkers..

Then there are the never ending periods where we learn to get by on about two minutes of sleep per night, which only sinks us deeper into the fog that comes with the total loss of short-term memory.

Of course, all of this is the precursor to the temper flares that are totally embarrassing and inexplicable... very problematic for family and friends.

Lastly, it hurts!! Joints ache and swell with every turn in the weather… every childhood injury coming back to haunt us. Once upon a time, we could bend into a pretzel but now, we can’t even bend.

… but hey… we will be able to get into the theatres with a seniors discount…yippee!

Homecare helps senior loved ones be able to age with grace and dignity and to stay in their own homes longer.  If your interested in homecare, but still have questions why not download or FAQs?

Getting Started with Homecare

We think Mom had dementia for quite a while before it was diagnosed, largely because she lived alone and it went undetected. We were all from away and she was very clever at hiding her memory issues over the phone.

She had always been very independent, going to the gym two or three times weekly, driving to and from the grocery store, etc.  Before we left Montreal, we had all tried, at one time or another to  get her to agree to live in one of the most beautiful and well run assisted living locations in that city, if only because we knew she would be safe in having company.  She absolutely refused, choosing instead, to stay in her own home…. alone.

When we last went for a visit, we asked after her beloved cat, Pooh. It was when she responded with “where’s my what?”, we realized that we would not be leaving Montreal without her. The cat was fine… and fed… but completely gone from Mom’s memory… for that moment, anyway.

Upon contacting Mom’s friends to let them know, we were told stories about her wanderingdescribe the imagearound downtown Montreal, disoriented and unable to find her way home. She had also become “lost” in her own apartment, unable to find her way from the bathroom to the living room. Why did they not call us and let us know what was going on? … because Mom had begged them not to.

So, Mom and Pooh came to live with me and my brother took care of settling Mom’s financial issues. The disease progressed very fast for Mom and she passed within a year and a half. Surely, had she been diagnosed earlier, the correct meds could have extended her life some. We all have trouble believing that our parent(s) are not immortal, after all, they have been around since we were born.  I’m glad we had spent time with her before her death and that it happened when she was with family and not alone.

Please keep a watchful eye on your loved ones and do not always take their word for it when they say that all is well.  This isn’t always easy, sometimes loved ones are far away, sometimes they put on a good show when we come to visit.  Why not take advantage of our free assessment to understand if your loved one’s needs are being met?

No worries I'll be fine (Homecare denial)

… So… You’ve been on the waiting list for two years and now you have finally7410485 hands of a senior woman on canehad the call you’ve been waiting for… knee replacement… soon you will be able to throw away the cane and run up and down those stairs again…  yippee!

However, there is one thing that you have forgotten… between the surgery and starting to run again, you may need some help at home while you are learning to get back on your feet. Surgery of any kind is a trauma and debilitating, especially when it affects your mobility but even when it doesn’t. This is particularly true when it comes to the first few days home. You may need help with meal prep, bathing, keeping the house up and feeding the dog because you really won’t feel like doing it.

Having a cup of tea prepared for you or your soup and sandwich brought to you on the couch (just like Mom used to do when you were sick) and then being able to drop back off to sleep without worrying about the cleanup, lessens stress and speeds recovery.

You are best to plan ahead by calling around and pricing the services, as well as checking on what type of service best suits your needs. When that long awaited call comes in, you are ready - simply call your chosen homecare company and let them know the dates you will require someone.

This is a call that should be made immediately after finding out your surgical date – it can sometimes take up to a week to get the care in place.

Always Home Homecare even has drivers to transport you to and from your procedure/surgery if you don’t have anyone who can help you with that.

Count on needing help for, at least, a week – in diminishing quantities, of course, as you recover. Your surgical team will definitely want someone with you for at least 24 hours post-op or they will not perform the procedure at all. When friends and family are unable to help, that is when you ask for homecare to fill in.

Aside from helping around the house, homecare can also take the time to help get you mobile again. Help you get up and get around the house a little or even out on the deck in nice weather. After all, there is only so much TV you can watch without losing your mind,

Let us be there for you and allow yourself the luxury of help when you need it the most.

Pediatric Homecare Alleviates Pain, Soothes Children’s Souls

Nothing is quite as delightful or uplifting than a child’s smile. The laughter that falls from their lips is heartwarming, soothing to even the weariest of souls. Witnessing a child immersed in their magical world of play brings out the inner child of most adults. Although, all of these wonderful qualities associated with children bring joy and happiness, nothing can sadden a parent’s heart faster than knowing that their child cannot experience these innocent childhood moments because they may have special needs.   pediatric home care

When your child is ill, whether it is a temporary condition, or a life-long struggle with a debilitating illness finding the best pediatric care and rehabilitation available is essential to preserving the quality of your child’s life. This can be achieved by hiring pediatric homecare professionals who are dedicated to providing children and their families with compassionate, loving care. Many Nova Scotia parents can benefit from these services, but struggle with knowing who to trust and how to find compassionate services.

Superior pediatric homecare services will offer families a customized treatment plan that is tailored to their child’s specific medical situation. Even if two children have the same diagnosis their care plans will not be the same because no two children are alike. This is something that parents should be aware of when seeking out Canadian, pediatric homecare facilities. You want to hire a caring, observant team of specialists who will provide care based on your child’s medical situation, their personality and their age.

  • Expert pediatric care services should operate around a family-centered philosophy that is able to:
  • Demonstrate a diverse, multi-disciplinary team attitude
  • Provide first-rate family education and support
  • Devise and execute proper planning and treatment coordination plans
  • Offer unrivaled patient care with 24/7 clinical support and management

Children feel most at ease when they are surrounded by familiar surroundings and people who they know they can count on to love and take care of them. This cannot happen in a sterile, uninviting nursing facility. Home is the best place for your child to heal and recover.  When a child is able to receive treatment in the familiar surroundings of their home, they not only have the opportunity to thrive physically, but they benefit emotionally, too. Having a familiar teddy bear nearby, hearing the recognizable sound of the washing machine, even smelling the familiar scent of the laundry detergent can impact the rate of recovery for your child. Children recover and thrive in situations that offer as much of a stress-free environment as possible. In this case, that is your home.

When you consider pediatric homecare for your ailing child you can be certain that there will more days filled with laughter, play and smiles. That is a life every parent wants for their child.

It's easy to get started with home care.  Our initial assessments only take about 45 minutes and they are free.  Are you ready to learn more about pediatric home care?
